CrossOver Linux 6.0

Today, CodeWeavers have released their latest version of the CrossOver suite. CrossOver Linux 6.0 allows you to install and run natively a select few windows applications on top of a Linux system. The applications are installed inside Windows ‘bottles’. The CrossOver suite is based on the Wine application, but has lots of proprietary extensions. Wine is an Open Source implementation of the API on top of X and Unix.

My interest in the current version of CrossOver Linux 6.0 is it’s capability to run World Of Warcraft on Linux. If I had to run any other kind of Windows applications, I would run them inside a VMware virtual machine, but unfortunately 3D graphics are not accelerated in these VMware machines.

Cloning Servers in VMware

Create one good Windows 2000 template (called a Gold Master at VMware)with all the drivers, tools and utilities (winzip, acrobat, newsid) and patches (sp4, WindowsUpdate), but do not include it in a domain. Then you simply copy your Gold Master to another directory, start that system, newsid it, and then only insert it into your target domain.I always keep an updated copy my Gold Master around, so I can get a new server up and running in just the timeframe of copying one directory to another.

SSL cert request signed by Microsoft CA for Exim 4.10 with TLS

Here is a post I made to the Exim mailing list, on how to configure secure connectivty with TLS using a Microsoft Windows 2000 Certificate Authority. It’s a combination of using both an Open-Source application and an integrated Microsoft CA.

This is a bit off-topic, but I could not find much information about signing OpenSSL generated certificates with a Microsoft (Win2000 server) Certificate Authority and using these signed certificate for the TLS support in Exim 4.10. So here are the steps I followed to get a successfull result. There might be a better way, or easier one, but this has worked for me. I found myself in the situation of wanting TLS support for Exim 4.10, yet wanting to leverage the Certificate Authority in use in my company. This Certificate Authority runs on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server (SP3), and is in use for Certificate Revocation Lists (CRL) and Encrypted File System (EFS) recovery agents.I proceeded to generate an OpenSSL (0.96b) RSA key. I then moved the certificate.csr to the Microsoft CA and signed it [out of the scope of this email]. I then exported the signed certificate using the Base64 setting and with the Certification Chain (saves the information in the PKCS#7 format). Having moved the certificate.p7b back to my mail server, I used the following command to extract the information from the PKCS#7 to a temporary file and edit it to fit the parameters of a .crt fileopenssl pkcs7 -text -inform PEM -in certificate.p7b -print_certs > certificate.crt

I then edited the certificate.crt file to remove the CA’s certificate information and public key, leaving only the parts between CERTIFICATE and END CERTIFICATE. Extract of certificate.crt is below:

Certificate:
Data:
Version: 3 (0×2)
Serial Number:
12:21:1a:14:00:00:00:00:00:05
Signature Algorithm: sha1WithRSAEncryption
Issuer: Email=someone@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, O=John Doe, CN=Doe CA
Validity
Not Before: Sep 9 08:57:19 2002 GMT
Not After : Sep 9 08:57:19 2004 GMT
Subject:
Subject Public Key Info:
Public Key Algorithm: rsaEncryption
RSA Public Key: (1024 bit)
Modulus (1024 bit):
07:ec:a3:9a:4f:50:9a:a1:f2:eb:f9:ef:3a:8b:44:

hu6z5Lm8nkY=
—–END CERTIFICATE—–

One question I’m still considering, and I haven’t found on this mailing list or in some documentation, would it be possible to get EXIM to TLS encrypt outgoing SMTP connections with remote SMTP servers ? I understand that my EXIM server will not have the remote’s
TLS certificate, but does it really matter ? I think encrypting the SMTP traffic would be a nicer than having normal cleartext traffic.

Tape driver for DEC TLZ04 wanted Options

As far as I know, there is NO driver for the TLZ04. Drivers exist for
the next DAT drives from Digital. I guess no one wrote a driver for a
product that wasn’t sold anymore. I even tried to find such a drive on
Digital’s internal network and Notes group.

Stop services

I want to stop some services on my NT machine. Now I know for example
that the FTP Service requires the NET STOP FTPSVC command, but
how can I find the command for EventLog, Spooler and other services.
I tried looking into the registry and stoping the corresponding
programs using the NET STOP command, but no luck.
Oh, and I know how to stop them using the Control Panle, but I need
to put them into a batch file, as I don’t want to stop 20 services
just to write a CD.

Windows Resizing (granularity) Problem in NT 3.5 & SP2

Suddenly I’ve got this weird Resize problem. I didn’t have it until a couple
of hours ago. I didn’t install anything new and even tried to reboot
the machine since to get rid of the problem.
What happens is if I now try to resize any window on my machine, I can only
increase/decrease it in huge quanity of pixels… If I open the notepad it’s a
1/4 screen window, and I can only expand it horizontaly to full width
or vertically to full height. And now that I think of it, it seems that earlier in
the day, my sizing was already getting worse, my windows resizing was only
able to move in steps of 20 pixels… maybe it’s the Graphic card that has a
problem (heat?). I tried to switch off the machine to cool it down, but that didn’t
help. I tried installing back a simple graphic driver like VGA instaed of the
Western Digital 90C31 driver, to see if the problem is related to the driver,
but that is not the case. I even tried botting with Windows 95, but there I
cannot replicate the problem, everything seems fine. I kind of baffled…
Any help is appreciated…

As I had problems send this mail, I try to fix it myslef, and I found the
answer. Because some other people might get it, I put a post here with the
Microsoft knowledge base answer. Just go to the Desktop in the Control Panel
and set the granularity to 1, et voila….

 – Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 3.5
 – Microsoft Windows NT Server version 3.5
———————————————————————-

SYMPTOMS
========

After you update Windows NT version 3.5 to Service Pack 2, the Granularity
value for Sizing Grid changes when you choose Desktop in Control Panel, log
off and log back on, and choose Desktop in Control Panel again. The
Granularity value in Desktop of Control Panel increases in increments of 8.
For example, if Granularity is set to 1, it changes to 8 the next time you
choose Desktop in Control Panel after you log off and log back on (and from
8 to 64 even though the maximum value for Granularity is 49).

CAUSE
=====

This problem only occurs if you choose Desktop in Control Panel after each
successive logon.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.5. A
fix to this problem is in development, but has not been regression-tested
and may be destabilizing in production environments. Microsoft does not
recommend implementing this fix at this time. Contact Microsoft Product
Support Services for more information on the availability of this fix.

unexpected startcode 000001b7 in system layer

While trying out the latest VMPEG 1.5 player with a sample mpeg movie,
I get this message “unexpected startcode 000001b7 in system layer”, any idea
what can be done to fix it ? MS Knowledge Base has no related document.
File river.mpg with settings : ‘Audio (level 2) & Video (8bit) & WinG’
or settings : ‘Audio (off) & Video (Gray) & No WinG’, gives the same result.

IP addresses -> names

[loads of stuff deleted..]

I got it kind of sorted now. I asked someone the name of the DNS server
running on campus. 😉 clever hein ?
But as I’ve learned now, we have a firewall, so I cannot FTP straight from
my machine out of campus… only Netscape & Mosaic using proxy addresses can
go breach the firewall .
